History of Commercial Businesses in Manchester New Hampshire
The expansive stretch of brick buildings that border the Merrimack River – originally designed and built to replicate Manchester, England – were home to large industrial and manufacturing companies during the industrial revolution of the early 1800’s and into the early 1900’s. In fact, the Amoskeag cotton mill was the largest in the world, with one mill 900 feet in length housing over 4000 looms. At its peak, Amoskeag had 17,000 employees and around 30 buildings cranking out over 50 miles of cloth per hour!
The Amoskeag Company was paternally-minded towards their employees. The company’s engineers and architects set about to build a city that was designed specifically for housing and cultural centers for enjoyment. Elm Street, the main stretch through downtown Manchester is a legacy to the thoughtful planning of this company. The Amoskeag Company went out of business during the Great Depression in 1935, but was revived in 1980 by New Hampshire entrepreneur and philanthropist Dean Kamen, who began converting the expansive mill spaces. The Amoskeag Mills are now home to apartments, restaurants, software companies, local college annexes, art studios and even a museum.
